Our Story

Two Guys, a Boxing Gym, and a Wild Idea

How a chance meeting at a gym on Adams Street turned into one of the busiest paintball fields in Houston.

2004

The Beginning

Back in 2004, Josh Briggs was studying Marketing at the University of Houston. Riding the city bus to campus, he'd pass through downtown and look up at the skyscrapers, wondering if he would ever build something important.

At the same time, Juan Escutia was already following his dreams — skipping college to open a dry-cleaners and teach himself how to run a business. Each evening after closing up, Juan would cross the street to open the doors at the Pueblo Boxing Gym on Adams Street.

One hot summer evening Josh wandered into the gym looking for a place to train. What he found was that he and Juan had more in common than a love of boxing — they shared a love of business. Long hours after gym sessions were spent discussing what makes a business truly great.

The Paintball Idea

In 2005 they went to play paintball and knew immediately — this was exactly the type of business they should start together. Three things would set them apart:

2006

The Hard Part

It wasn't easy. There were many days Josh and Juan jumped in to play with the few customers who straggled in because there was no one else to play with. It was slow for months, but they didn't quit.

They didn't quit because it was never about the money — it was about building something great, something they could be proud of. Building something great takes time and effort.

2008

Then One Day It All Changed

After a couple of years, things began to take off. Customers spread the word. The fields were improved and expanded. Today Urban War Zone is one of the busiest paintball fields in Houston — and the most reviewed, with the highest scores of any field in the area.

2013

It Takes a Team

In 2013 Juan moved on to pursue his first dream of creating meaningful products in the boxing industry. Josh has continued building — a company that brightens people's lives and helps create lasting memories of fun.

The UWZ story is really the story of two guys with a wild idea, guts, and a lot of luck. Along the way they've had help from family, friends, and a great team.
